Hi Shanshan,

Thank you for your sharing! I agree with you that PLN can help our career development. I am similar to you. My PLN is composed of my classmates and tutors. We study one or several courses together, and we discuss the content of the courses in the community. Maybe we will be engaged in similar occupations in the future, so this is also a potential network.

Hi Ali,

Thank you for sharing, it’s really specific. One point you mentioned is new, about reputation. I think that positive people will post positive and interesting content on social media, which will attract people’s attention more, so that their PLN will get more attention, so that they will get more opportunities when seeking a job. This is a benign cycle.

  • Can your PLN be used to help professional development post-course? If yes, how? If no, what limitations exist?

I think PLN can help professional development after the course. As a student, most of my PLN is composed of classmates and mentors. PLN allows me to express ideas or ask questions quickly and easily, and get a response. In addition, we all have similar courses or come from the same major here, so our future career plans are mostly similar. We can also share and discuss through PLN in future work.

  • Can your PLN be relied on to open professional opportunities?

In my opinion, PLN can provide open career opportunities. First of all, PLN is an open network platform. Many people will share and publish content here. Maybe my future work or my boss will also be in it. Besides, I will pay close attention to job information related to my major, which will help me find and select suitable jobs. At the same time, when people publish content and discuss content, they will constantly update their understanding and ideas. Maybe at first, people are confused about their future work direction, but through constant understanding, they finally find the job they want.

Blog #9 Why Media Literacy matters in your PLN

– What is media literacy?

Media literacy is a very important skill in today’s society. Generally speaking, media literacy refers to the ability to access, understand and create media information. Its goal is to train the whole people to interpret media information objectively and fairly. First, we need to understand the characteristics and operation methods of social media. Second, we need to choose a platform that suits us to build our own PLN, publish our own content, and communicate effectively with people.

– Why is it important?

I think the main reason why media literacy is important is that social media is widely spread. Almost everyone needs to use social media, but the information transmitted on social media may be false and one-sided. People need to obtain information and absorb knowledge. At the same time, learn to correctly distinguish true and reliable content and protect your privacy.

– Why is it dismissed?

On the one hand, new media is in a stage of rapid development, but under the education system, media literacy accounts for a relatively small proportion, resulting in a lack of overall national literacy. On the other hand, people in today’s society pay more attention to material life, so there is a state of extreme lack of spiritual life, and the values of various social media have appeared to certain deviations. In addition, in this open Internet era, everyone can freely publish content, and people are easily affected by some speech, thus losing their own judgment and lacking rationality.

– Why should you aim for varied views but the factual consensus in your PLN?

People may have different views on some issues, which is a normal thing. We cannot guarantee that our views are completely correct, so it is particularly important to understand the views of others and interact with others. Not only can we learn more knowledge, but we can also look at things more objectively. Reaching a consensus in PLN can help us attract more people, so that we can more easily obtain information from many aspects. This is a virtuous circle.

Hi Ziwang,

Thank you for sharing, it’s really detailed, especially on the second question. In fact, I don’t use Twitter and Facebook much. Through your content, I think Twitter is really useful. Everyone has the right to join in the conversations they are interested in and get new inspiration through online communication. More importantly, it records people’s voices, allowing us to respond whenever and wherever possible.

Hello Allen,
Great post! Especially with regard to the third question. When talking on social media platforms, we know very little about each other, so people will not be affected for their own reasons, people will not care about your background, etc. Here, everyone can express themselves freely, really good.

  •  Explore the video provided and reflect on the themes of a PLN in a professional capacity.

In the video, Brad Baker participated in many activities related to Aboriginal people and anti-racism, and established a health professional network through social media. PLN allows people to pass on their opinions and voices, so that everyone can share and communicate together, making PLN more diversified and inclusive. In addition, PLN has brought benefits to indigenous people and allowed them to reconcile with the public. PLN not only allows everyone to share their lives, but also lets everyone know more facts.

  • Which social media platforms are beneficial in education?

I think the more useful social media platforms are social platforms for professional learning, such as Google, MOOC, and NetEase Cloud Classroom. These platforms are relatively professional and authoritative. People can find many learning resources here, including some books and courses from famous school teachers. You can effectively solve the problems encountered in learning, saving time and money. The second is the most commonly used social platforms for our young people, WeChat, Twitter, Facebook, etc. These platforms bring us too much fresh information, where we can chat with friends, share life, and learn about China. All kinds of information outside, and more importantly, we can establish contacts with like-minded people.

  • Consider the equality that exists when all have the same platform to engage community dialogues.

In an equal environment, everyone has the right to express their views, so that we can learn from each other and make progress in communication. Secondly, on social platforms, we will not be affected by individual differences, and we can freely express our opinions, thus establishing an effective PLN.

  • What are the benefits of a diverse and inclusive PLN in social media sharing that understands where you are coming from with messaging that impacts the community?
  • For people sharing on social media, a diverse and inclusive PLN has many benefits. First of all, having a diversified PLN means that creators will have a wider space for dissemination, which can help people convey their opinions and information more effectively. Secondly, inclusive PLN can attract people from different fields, and at the same time increase the number of its own followers. With the increase in the number of visits, the influence of the content will gradually expand.
  • Consider the audiences and how we adapt our messaging accordingly.
  • In order to attract more audiences, we first need to understand the public’s preferences and ideas, for example, keep up with current events and current popular hot topics. Or some topics that have been discussed by the public but have not reached a clear conclusion, and so on. Secondly, we need to use more interesting ways to develop content, such as videos, pictures, etc., for long-form discussions, most people are impatient to read. The most important thing is that we must ensure that the information posted is true and reliable, and is very useful for people, such as some tips or trivia.
  • Research our guest and see how they leveraged their network into a campaign.
  • When researching our guest Markiel Simpson, we can find that his PLN is very diverse and inclusive. He is not only a construction manager, but also involved in many community and political activities. From the initial self-study, it became a gathering of a group of people. There, he fought for the rights of people of color, not just discussing issues in writing, but convening some like-minded people to solve problems together, thus expanding his social circle and increasing the topic’s attention. So he formed a social circle, which made his election activities easier.

Hi Shanshan,

Great post. I agree that social media can help us learn new knowledge. Because everyone has different ideas, we will discuss and explore different viewpoints in the community. After this process, people will make progress.

Hi Alison,

Your blog looks very clear and I like it very much. However, I don’t understand what you said “social responsibility is the best motivation for establishing PLN”, and I hope to get your feedback. In addition, regarding the limitations of PLN, your thoughts are very comprehensive, especially on the last point, because it is online communication, so we may not know each other.

Hi Qing,

Thank you for your sharing. I agree with your views on establishing a reliable PLN. Sharing photos with some celebrities does greatly increase the credibility of people’s pages. Secondly, experienced storytellers usually have in-depth research on the topics they want to talk about. In order to prevent mistakes, they will read a lot of materials and literature.

Blog Post #6

– How do notable individuals use social media?

I think celebrities usually use social media to promote something or share their lives. Because they all have a lot of fans, they will have a certain impact on those who follow them. Some celebrities will popularize their knowledge in more professional aspects, such as technology, finance, etc., which play a role in learning and communication. And film and television stars are more likely to promote some of their endorsement products in order to make money. Or share their daily lives to let fans know them better and attract a larger number of fans.

– What are the benefits of being in the public eye and having a PLN?

The advantage of being in the public eye is that people have the opportunity to get more information, interact with people they want to reach, and get followers with similar ideas. If you are confused about something, you can share it on social platforms, and someone will provide explanations and ideas to help you understand better. For celebrities, I think they can gain more fans while gaining benefits, which is a very beneficial thing. In addition, people are encouraged and supervised in the public view, just like the blog we publish now. This is our weekly task, and students can supervise and comment on each other.

– Building community with online tools provided by the employer can be limiting, what are the perceived restrictions and benefits?

  • The communities established by employers have limitations and benefits.
  • First of all, people can easily establish contact with like-minded people, who can communicate and learn from each other and make progress.
  • However, because under the influence of employers, people want to express their better aspects, what people know about each other is not the truest side. And because of some restrictions, people cannot speak freely, resulting in poor communication.

– Delivering information in a connected society requires verifiable resources, how to build a PLN to rely on?

In order to establish a reliable PLN, we must ensure that the content we publish is true. We can obtain materials and analyze and summarize materials from multiple academic journals and news reviewed by our peers. We cannot simply read one or two articles. Secondly, when establishing contact with others, we must also carefully examine the background information of others, and contact them after confirming that they are more professional or have a certain degree of authority and recognition.

– How do those, who are veteran storytellers, minimize risk in sharing misinformation?

Experienced storytellers will first conduct in-depth research on the topics they are talking about. When searching for information, they generally judge whether the source is reliable, and at the same time seek advice from professionals in some fields to polish their articles. In addition, they will conduct a lot of screening and reading, choosing the best from many sources.
